Born in Tokyo's Setagaya district and soon after moved to Hirosaki, Aomori Pref., Saburo Tokito was raised in Osaka at an early age.

In 1973 he entered the Osaka Municipal Senior High School of Technology and Arts and in 1976 enrolled in the Design Department of the Osaka University of Arts where he majored in Industrial Design. He acquired his first taste of acting through the university's Acting Circle. Around the same time he also became involved in bands as a vocalist.

He left university after two and half years then moved to Tokyo.

In 1980, he debuted in the rock musical “Hair”

In 1981 he appeared in his first television drama, The Rainbow-Colored Woods, recording the title song of the same series and securing a hit with Drowsily Embracing the River's Flow. In 1983 he debuted in the film world with Me Own Wedding (Shochiku), following that up in 1984, starred in the blockbuster “Umi Tsubame Joe no Kiseki” (Shochiku, English title: Miracle of Joe, the Petrel)

After years of committing his time to the entertainment industry, for 4 years from1999, he took a hiatus from his career and moved to New Zealand to raise his children.

He returned to Japan in 2003 and immediately made a strong comeback by starred in the popular drama series “Dr. Koto” and blockbuster movie “Umizaru”

Recent works include a TV drama series called “Kyumei Byoto 24ji” (English title: Emergency Room 24 Hours) and the movie “Time Scoop Hunter” coming out in summer 2013.

His favorite sports are swimming. Favorite hobbies are photography.
